Down the stairs of “The Sanctuary” in Columbus sits Lincoln Street Salsa. The atmosphere resembles that of a small club: colorful lights, a full bar, and an open dance floor.
After just one ballroom dance lesson, I felt somewhat prepared to try the real deal. From 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday night, I joined the beginner class on salsa, bachata and merengue. As an uncoordinated dancer, the basic steps and spins were doable.
When it came time for the open dance, the lights were lowered and people crowded the dance floor. Some were certainly not beginners, but I tried my best to follow along.
While I probably looked ridiculous flailing around and (occasionally) misstepping, I had a lot of fun. And it made me sweat. Next up I’ll be on the lookout for a beginner part-two class.
